Shinji usually has a varied taste in wardrobe. He almost always is seen with some kind of tie, though. Shinji has blond hair that is about jaw-length and usually has expressions that reveal his upper teeth. His most seen outfit is a generic Karakua school-boy uniform that almost always has a long brown trench coat covering accompanied by a newsboy cap. He also seems to have a tongue piercing, it revealed to being a round, somewhat golden ring in the middle.

Shinji is usually a very upbeat person, being used mostly as comical relief.
He has an almost flippant attitude, almost never being serious when the situation actually does call for it. This shows with his love for annoying the hell out of his comrade, Hiyori-- but it almost always ends with him being slapped by one of her sandals. He also tends to refer Hiyori by the name of Snaggletooth, which just ends with him being abused as well. He doesn't seem to be bothered due to them both barely treating the other with any known respect. Surprisingly, Shinji is a bit immature to be considered the unofficial leader of the Vizards-- being seen to make faces and smartass comments at other's expense (mostly towards Hiyori, though).
Shinji also has a strange habit of calling a good bit of cute girls he meets as his "first love". This is most likely a lie, though, since he always seems to have a deadpan look on his face. He has never referred Hiyori as his first love-- all the more annoying.
Shinji also seems to have a taste for jazz music, hinting at this when he had a phonograph that played vinyl records as his days as captain.
Despite his normally comical personality, Shinji is actually talented with seeing other people. He is perceptive and quick to note things about others. When in battle, he is the complete opposite of his casual self-- he is a calm, serious and level-headed man. He will take the battle quite seriously and will normally rely on his Hollow powers more than his own zanpakuto.

-* cero: Energy is gathered at a horizontal positioned line at Shinji's fist. The crimson colored cero is then released with an insanely wide width and extremely brute force. His cero is more powerful at a distance.
-* enhanced strength: When his hollow mask is on, Shinji has shown a greatly increased amount of strength.
-* enhanced speed: Shinji has shown, as well, a greatly increased amount of movement speed.
Sakanade
* collapse: The release command for Sakanade.
* inverted world: The special ability of his shikai is to create an inverted world. This is caused by the scent of the sword gives off once released. Inverting the opponent's sense of direction, Shinji defines it as a trump card. In this world, up and down, left and right, and forward and backward are opposites of each other. Not only is the direction changed, but the opponent's eyesight and where they get cut is reversed as well. Shinji states that even a powerful Shinigami were to face him in battle, their body would not be able to adapt and will simply continue to fight back by reflex. The inverted world can be targeted at a specific person, making it a great use of group fighting.

history
110 years ago, Shinji served as the 5th Division's captain.
He is first seen to be attending a captain's ceremony when serving his time as such. He greets his lieutenant at the time, Sosuke Aizen and they share a debate about the proper fashion for the time of the event. This then leads to Aizen commenting about his taste in jazz, another small talk until they make their way to 1st Division Headquarters to attend the promotion ceremony. When he opens the doors, he is suddenly attacked by Hiyori but is soon taken away by Love Aikawa. This starts the love-hate friendship of him and Hiyori after he taunts her in a childish way. He then has a conversation with Love about the captains and the like. When Kisuke arrives to the meeting, Shinji is not at all amused by the other's first impression.
After the ceremony, Shinji approaches Kisuke and tells him why Hiyori is giving him trouble and offers up advice. Shinji then comments about Aizen secretly watching them and then leaves the room, ordering Aizen to follow him.
Nine years later, Shinji is dispatched with Love, Rose, Hachigen, and Lisa to preform an investigation on the disppearance of Rukongai residents and captain Kensei and his division's members by Genryusai. Upon arrival, Shinji quickly fends off what seems to be a hollowfied Kensei from attacking Hiyori. After a series of fighting, defending, and the like, Shinji is captured and is used for Aizen's hollowfication experiments. At first, Shinji begins to fight back, but the hollowfication soon becomes too much for him to handle.
He is then rescued by Kisuke and Tessai and is saved from becoming a complete hollow.
